Every once in a while while browsing instagram I come across someone who is livestreaming. Often than not its some goofy ass or some repetitive chopped up beat heard a thousand times. Then one dark covid19 quarantined night I came across SIM. This guy was just chilling out playing his beats on the roland without a care in the world. He looked lost in the moment happy to share his beats and vision online.
I reached out and SIM was happy to share.
I present SIM.

J. Ayur is a producer originally hailing from Bronx, New York, and he’s one who takes pride of being a native in the birthplace of Hip Hop in addition to looking at himself as a purist of the genre. Ranging from many styles such as Boom bap, to Chill, Lofi, Ambient, Down-tempo, and more, he aims to make a fusion of many different textures to bring together something remarkable that is both throwback and nostalgic for the 90’s heads of the golden age era and also modern for the new school, all at the same time. Recently just putting out his first major release “Binary Reality”, he’s already aiming to showcase more work in the near future, so be on the lookout!

Heavily influenced by the warm, analogue sound of cassette and vinyl, i wish to naturally capture and broadcast a feeling of nostalgia to all those who listen. Each of their listed beats rings true to the lofi vibe and we just cant get enough. Check them out on soundcloud.
so fresh its still wet from the boat.
When you feel like everyone is putting you down for your stupidity, locate your conviction. A holding point, if you will.
Everyone is everyone in every way. Sincerely Viyuki.

We checked out their ep and we loved the lofi hiphop vibe. well worth checking out their soundcloud and getting into their beats n tings’
I love making music but it seriously sucks having a minimal amount of people listening when i feel like my quality is there and im finally making the music ive always wanted and am proud of. This is an album i made to mirror the darker hip hop instrumentals of the 90s largely inspired by mobb deeps production i wanted it to almost be like a movie soundtrack and i think its a good way to lose yourself in what living in that dark world would be like for 20 mins i have a more upbeat groovy album im really interested in getting out there as well if you end up liking this 🙂
Location: los angeles
Favorite producers: pete rock, statik selektah , havoc.
Influences: Funk, Disco, ambient, early to mid 90s hip hop (mostly east coast)
Run DMC about Hip Hop today, he didn’t hold back.
Lets hope lofi takes hiphop to a special place.

A young Belgian artist living in Vilvoorde. They are currently trying different kinds of music genres and don’t really have a favorite track at the moment because they like listening to every genre out there.
But right now, I’m in my Lo-Fi moments. What I really want is to become an artist that doesn’t have limits, that can produce everything he imagined perfectly. I remember being at my cousin’s house and we were having fun making some music 4 years ago. It was the first time ever I really was in touch with music. Sinds then, I can’t really live without listening to music and making it. I’d like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my music.
Well we really enjoyed the vibe from their lofi beats so check out this new fresh unknown artist…

Hey!
I go by Yung Cody and I’m a lofi/trap producer from Long Beach, CA.I’m heavily influenced by just Anime overall.
Artists like Nujabes, really had an impact on me growing and I was hoping to not replicate but use their techniques to craft my own songs.
My main goal with my Lofi tracks is to set a mood and draw a picture in your mind that takes you to the place that I was in when I made the track.

Jung Fellaz are a beat-making duo based out of Calgary, Alberta. Growing up they were introduced to a variety of musical influences ranging from soul, punk, metal, and classic rock. For much of their teens their musical projects consisted of primarily punk and blues bands as well as limited electronic releases before they ultimately turned our heads in the direction of hip-hop beats.
We began to transition away from our most recent rock band to Jung Fellaz in the summer of 2017 and released our first beat tape in March 2018. In our music as Jung Fellaz we strive to blend our favourite aspects of sample-based beats with our own acoustic recordings, frequently creating a sample-based loop then writing and recording guitar, bass and drums on top of it.
You can also keep up to date with future projects on our Instagram page
Lil bow pete just really likes making beats, especially the boom bap/old school style. He takes influence from the greats like J Dilla, Madlib, Knxwledge, etc. Not limited to hip hop exclusively, he really just like music production in general.
Not much else is known about the elusive fresh beatmaker lil bow pete but here at chillsky we love his lofi hiphop.
POW POW POW into the inbox came this Canadian lofi magician going under the moniker of ‘sushileaf’.
Sushileaf has been producing music for just over a year now; he picked up FL Studio in February of 2017.
Hailing from Toronto, Canada. Up in the cold and friendly north!
Growing up, he spent a lot of time listening to alternative music and the current rap styles at the time (Mudvayne, Linkin Park, Slipknot, 50 Cent, Nelly, Chingy etc).Brother influenced him ventures into the more roots hip-hop by exposing him to A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Mobb Deep, and many other hip-hop legends from that earlier time period. This stuck with him, and gave sushileaf a deep love for that 90s style sound.
About a year and a half ago, he found lofi hip-hop while exploring some vaporwave channels on youtube. I liked vaporwave, but it wasn’t exactly right for me. Something felt like it was missing, until I found lofi hip-hop.
I quickly dove through many of the ‘leading’ producers in the genre, such as eevee, bsd.u, jhfly, wun two, jinsang, and j^p^n; I was blown away. This was the music that quickly became top of the list for my listening pleasure.
Then one day, at a visit with a relative, a cousin of mine showed me FL Studio. She was using it for a highschool project. I became so interested! The software looked really cool, and I had to know more. She ended up having a spare copy of the program which she let me take. She knew I loved music, and thought why not!
I had never considered creating music before, but once I installed FL Studio on my pc for the first time, and watched a couple tutorials on the basics… I was hooked. For the past year I have opened the software almost every single day and it has been a wonderful journey and learning experience!
I’ve come to somewhat find my own sound I think (but am always experimenting), and I am so greatful for the support and feedback I have been getting! I never knew it was possible!
I hope many more get to enjoy the music I put out there.
Cheers!
Oh, also, I create all my artwork. It’s not 100% from scratch (source images), but I do excel with digital compositions. I’ve been working with photoshop as a hobby for over 15 years.

Having studied at university in Leeds he has expanded his fanbase north of his hometown and is continuing to grow with each release. HT making beats for about 4 years now, and making lofi boom bap type beats for about 2-3, but never bothered about promotion. To me, the actual making of music was always most important, but now I would love to have other people hear my music and get the same enjoyment from listening to it as I do creating it. Some of my biggest influences production wise are MF Doom, RZA, J Dilla, Nujabes, and clams casino.

Hello ! I chose the name hate.u because of my depression and anxiety that I have when I am around some people. I probably a horrible person for having such things, but I find at peace and enjoyment of my time when I am making my music.
So my music influence you can say is nujabes, he was one of the hiphop artists that I listened to and got attached to this kind of music. I never thought about making music, but I always had that groovy moody vibe whenever I am near good music, I guess you can say it is natural for me to make music.
I also love listening to Joji , best original artist ever, he has so much uniqueness in his music.

“Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

Exclusive interview with lofi artist eveline aka eevee.
Please can you say a little bit about yourself, eg age, location etc.
I live in the Netherlands in a town called Dordrecht. I’m 24 years old. In my free time I like to make beats, hang with friends, travelling and sometimes go to the gym.
What drew you to making music that eventually led you to making your beats?
First I wanted to learn how to dj. I did that for 3 months and I bought a new laptop and there was a music program on it. Very basic with loops I started with that and I like it. My ex boyfriend was a producer and he put fl studio on my pc and I start working with that. He learned me how fl studio kind of worked. I practice every day, I liked it so much it stopped learning to dj and just focus on my music. And thats how it all began. Now 4 years later I’m here 🙂
Why do you enjoy about the beatmaking process?
I like that it give me peace it brings me to a other world. I can’t explain it really it just feels fine. I really like to work with samples and make something new with it.
You have a nice following on soundcloud etc at what point did you realise you had a talent that people seemed to enjoy?
I just like to make beats and upload them. It’s nice to see that people enjoy it. Idk if I feel like I have talent, I work hard for it but for me it stills feel I can learn much about music productions. The feedback I get from my fans draw me to continue this and try to grown.
Can you remember your first live show and how did it go?
Yes, It was in the Netherlands in a town the Hague. It was a fashion event, the released a new clothing line. I was so nervous but it went good, and I had a lovely evening.
Any tips for budding SP404 users?
I had a lot on the manual of the sp 404 haha. So I think if you start it’s good to read it. And just try to explore it and find your sound. It’s a really nice machine.
Who are your music influences?
J Dilla, Nujabes, Clams Casino, Crystal Castles, and a lot of soundcloud producers.
Whats a perfect weekend for you ?
Take a long nap, wake up make some beats, later they day chill with friends, maybe go to a party and get drunk 🙂

Mark (Marviltron) based in Chicago. He just released a lofi hiphop track titled “feels” featuring Angeloop and although it looks like his only lofi tune we hope its the start of something great. Keep making the beats..
“Feels” is about finding your happy place, chillin, relaxing — perfect mood to start the Fall. The visual was taken during a kite festival near Uptown, Chicago of this year. It will be released to iTunes, Spotify, etc. on Labor Day.
Jpro (or JuanitoPro), has always performed hiphop beats and sought perfection in sound, but now he has done 5 beats in lo-fi, looking for beauty in noise, distortion and low fidelity. These beats are very simple, wanting to reflect the difficulty that had the old hiphop producers to realise their productions due to the little technology in this scope.

Tactilian is an American musician and producer currently residing in Vientiane, Laos. Originally drawn to guitar-driven genres such as punk and hardcore as a teen, his tastes gradually broadened, bringing him into various styles of as jazz, funk/soul, psychedelic rock, and hip-hop. His tracks pull from these various genres to create a sonic palette that is at once wide and difficult to label.
As a hip-hop producer, his biggest influences come from several artists who made their mark during the 90s, including the Dust Brothers’ work with the Beastie Boys, Gangstarr, and Nujabes.

In recent years one of hip-hop’s key, yet least documented, practices has become one of its most celebrated. Beat tapes, a collection of sometimes unfinished instrumental productions designed to showcase a producer’s skills, have today become an accepted release format as popular as their close relative, the mixtape. It wasn’t always like this however, so how did a practice that was once the preserve of the nerdiest hip-hop kids – right up there with scratch practice – become an established release format?
Let’s take it back to the old school
Attempting to trace a history of the beat tape in hip-hop is tricky. All the producers I’ve spoken to in the past agree on various elements of its evolution as a practice, yet there seems to be little to no information on where, when, how and with whom it might have originated. One thing is sure: the concept of beat tapes is likely to have arisen at some point in the ’80s when hip-hop music and culture took flight from its New York birthplace.
Speaking to Primus Luta (whose recent piece on Dilla and beat tapesinspired my own), I’ve strung together a possible origin story. It perhaps starts with Fab Five Freddy and the Wild Style sessions. Primus argues that the Wild Style instrumental white label 12″ that Freddy had pressed to give DJs in New York at the time could be thought of as a proto-beat tape. From there I’d argue demo tapes could be seen as a real precursor to what would come to be known as beat tapes: rough versions of beats that could be passed around for MCs to write/practice to or to showcase a producer’s beats and lead to a potential release. See this 2009 interview with Large Professor for his dislike of old demos getting released on vinyl. Like beat tapes, these were never meant to be publicly heard.
S i M from Stroud in England, UK.
He’s been producing for just over 2 years now but has always been into music since a young age.
SiM love simple, head nod beats with nostalgic undertones from strings and synths in old records.
There’s nothing better than going out at the weekend and getting dusty fingers, going through the vinyl crates in town, hoping to find hidden gems for my next track.
He’s just had Portland up and coming rapper, Myke Bogan release a track over one of my beats:.

melocat – 28 years old, born and raised in the UK. First got into making hip hop as a teenager listening to Gangster Rap. Later discovered underground UK Hip Hop and then the beat makers themselves. Fell in love with instrumentals, Hip hop’s Jazz roots and what the genres represented. After coming across the sub-genre ‘LoFi – Hiphop’ he quickly realised the potential for expressing experiences and feelings that had not been available to him before. Becoming a parent and settling down played a major part in his life… and his music. Nowadays you’ll find him sitting down on a Friday evening with a cup of tea, listening to chilled beats. His influences include all the Hip hop and Jazz music that has made an everlasting impact on his life and all the beat makers doing their thing.

Iz has a deep Hip Hop history going back to rap cyphers on the street corners of the late 90’s. He has been a recording artist and performance artist since 2005. He was a member of various groups and projects, but released his first solo album in 2010 titled “Word Iz…” that garnered him a fair amount of notoriety worldwide among underground Hip Hop hop fans.
After years of experimenting and refining his craft he re-emerged in 2016 as “BKA Iz” with a new self titled album release, quickly followed by the “Groundwire EP” and “Blazing Terrain” in early 2017. His music is true to his roots; a vintage 90’s boom bap feel that meshes with modern Lo-Fi and Chillhop influence. He is described by his peers as a witty lyricist with heavy punchlines and is known for his eclectic beat slection.
Iz also has several other releases planned in 2017 – including his first beat tape and works behind the scenes on various projects for notable artists.

Each artist in their own right needs more exposure.
Sanko Beats aka Islam a north african, Algeria to be specific 21 years old, electrical engineer, but importantly one of the finest smoothest beat makers we have come across here at the Chillsky.
Sanko Beats counts tomppabeats, jinsang and error garner as his influences.
His tracks are dope and we sure hope he gets more exposure and he gets the recognition.
Trappola hit us up with a fresh track and we thought we must feature this artist!
Trappola is 21 years old and hes been producing music for a little over 7 years now. He started off making electronic dance music like dubstep, and trap. Eventually moved onto hip-hop music, and then graduated into chilled out “lofi” style instrumentals. One of his biggest influences has to be Pete Rock. Pete Rock is an amazing producer from NY, one of the best, and has produced so many classic songs that Trappola has cherished over the years. You can hear Pete Rock boom bap influence on his drum patterns, and from the type of drum sounds Trappola prefers. Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Trappola is a city person for sure. Love the hustle and bustle of the city. He claims to be a nerd at heart, with a love superheroes and collecting comics/figures.
Here at chillsky we love his beats and lofi hiphop vibe and hes full tracks are worth an investigation.
These artists are now in rotation after track submissions. These are the freshest lofi hiphop beats this side of mars and you should def check out their soundclouds for dope beats.
Kamal Akeem hit us up with the track Spaceships and it hit us in the face like a wet fish finding out Trump won the election. He is a music producer based out of the Southside of Birmingham, Alabama. He has been producing seriously since 2011 and uses FL Studio. He has created a sound that incorporates rap, soul samples, trap, chill, and house influences. He produces music for his local music scene, works with several internet vloggers, but primarily makes standalone instrumental music. He makes music because he enjoys the ability to express emotion through sound and giving others the chance to relate.
Check out his full works below , we struggled to find a bad beat/vibe. Keep producing Kamal keep producing…
Check out below Kama’s freshest beat tape.
Nova Drone aka Ryan is a 20 year old producer. His influences are many different lofi hiphop artist much like jinsang and bsd.u. He likes sampling a lot of different sounds to get that perfect beat. Nova Drone is fresh to the scene but in the future we are sure he will progress and make his tracks a whole lot better (if at all possible).
Be sure to check out his Instagram @supre.memes_ if you want to follow. (10k) dm himif you’d like to collab, He’s looking for rappers who would want to use my beats in their productions as well.
Heizzah is 22-year-old guy from Finland, living in Sweden. He’s been musically active since he was 10 years old. During his musical journey he’s been playing the trumpet in an orchestra, drums in a punk band and lately making beats. He wants to try as many things as possible and producing beats is what he’s most into at the moment. good for Chillsky!
his influences are from all over the place: from 90’s alt rock and grunge to Finnish hip hop and electronica.
For the time being, he’s just producing as much stuff as possible, trying to take his skills to the next level all the time.

bornsexyy sent us a track submission and we thought his tracks hit the spot worthy of a feature.
He make music for fun and is a huge anime/cartoon/video game fan, and love meshing my interests with my music with arts/samples/themes etc. He’s being doing this for about 4/5 years, got no hardware, everything is done on Ableton. He also has a Maschine but not able to make stuff he likes on it yet!!! He spent the last 9 months or so cranking out tunes but not uploading online or anything. so yeah just starting to get back into the game a bit, do some mixes, working on making more visual stuff to go with music but so far its pretty shit!! He got a track on that compilation tape BLESS the other week too. as for weblinks just soundcloud and instagram:

Here at chillsky we are on the lookout for fresh artists and tight music production and Eriq Betts hit us up to be added into the stream and we loved his tracks. They are tight and flow really well and you should checkout his soundcloud right now!
Jazzy, chilled and versatile are the most appropriate ways to describe his music. Whether it’s just a simple loop with beat to it or a more lush track with a string section, as long as the beat is dope, Eriq Betts will put it out into the world. Though new to Lo-fi Hip Hop, he is not new to music production having previously made beats from scratch for many years. After being inspired by the likes of Jinsang, Tomppabeats and FloFilz he has decided to focus his energies on making sample-based music. His only objective is to make music that people enjoy listening to as much as he enjoys making it – everything else is a bonus.
At the top we have a submit track facility and these guys/gals took the time out to make some great chilled beats so take the time out to check on these artists and their story in the chilled lofi hiphop beats genre.
You can hear all these artists now in the radio stream.
Johnson Barnes (born April 15, 1983 in Inglewood, California), better known by the stage name Blu, is an American rapper and producer. In 2007 he released his debut album, “Below the Heavens”, which was produced entirely by Exile, one half of Emanon. Since then he has collaborated with Mainframe under the name Johnson&Jonson, and with Ta’Raach under the name C.R.A.C. Knuckles. He has also released several solo albums, most notably “HerFavoriteColo(u)r” (2009), “j e s u s” (2011) and “No York!” (2011). Furthermore, in 2009 he produced the Sene & Blu album “ADayLate&ADollarShort” and in 2011 he released a second album with Exile, “Give Me Flowers While I Can Smell Them”.
Blu is definitely a leader in the new school of Los Angeles emcees. His presence is undeniable, while his music captivates audiences regardless of race, class, and gender. He has been credited with taking LA hip hop back to the place where Freestyle Fellowship, Jurassic 5, and The Pharcyde left off.
With his cool-headed SoCal demeanor and everyman charisma, Blu was championed at the onset of his recording career when he collaborated with Emanon DJ/producer Exile for the highly acclaimed LP Below the Heavens (2007). Born Johnson Barnes in Inglewood, California, Blu, whose stepfather was a pastor, was very influenced by gospel and Christian rap when he was developing his MC skills in middle and high school. His musical turning point came when he first heard the Common classic “I Used to Love H.E.R.” (1994), as well as the Chicago MC’s third album, One Day It’ll All Make Sense (1997). From then onward, Blu abandoned his schoolyard freestyle frame of mind and dedicated his abilities to crafting well-written songs. As he started doing live performances, he paid his dues working as a hype man for several underground rap and soul artists, including Slum Village, Steve Spacek, Platinum Pied Pipers, and, of course, Emanon. His relationship with Exile and newfound mindset in making music pointed him toward signing with L.A. independent Sound in Color in 2004, which for the young MC meant brushing off interest from Interscope and Death Row.
Subsequently, he cut a few records for Exile’s Sound in Color album, Dirty Science (2006), recorded features for other L.A. artists, and self-pressed his Lifted EP in 2006. When Below the Heavens first hit shelves in August 2007, Blu and Exile were virtual unknowns in underground hip-hop, but Blu’s deft songwriting and Exile’s soul-drenched, Jay Dee-influenced production quickly amassed them a national audience. Below the Heavens ended up on many critics’ year-end lists and, particularly, launched Blu into the public hip-hop eye. Remaining independent, Blu later turned to Sound in Color labelmate and L.A.-via-Detroit MC/producer Ta’Raach (formerly known as Lacks) for the collaborative project C.R.A.C. Knuckles. Over the next five years, Blu released a total of seven albums and mixtapes, including 2011’s Open and Blu & Exile’s Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them in 2012. The previously unreleased albums Her Favorite Colo(U)r and NoYork! also finally saw proper release in 2013. ~ Cyril Cordor, Rovi
The underground Los Angeles-based duo of MC Blu (b. Johnson Barnes) and DJ/producer Exile (b. Aleksander Manfredi) earned widespread acclaim right out of the gate with their debut album, Below the Heavens (2007), which critics crowned as the seemingly perfect marriage of Blu’s everyday-struggle raps and Exile’s Pete Rock- and J Dilla-inspired production. Blu, struggling to make ends meet at the time, first crossed paths with Exile in the early to mid-2000s, while the rapper earned gigs as a hype man for various soul/hip-hop outfits like Slum Village, Platinum Pied Pipers, and Exile’s own duo, Emanon. In fact, Blu knew the other half of Emanon, MC/singer Aloe Blacc, who then introduced the two to each other. Deciding to sign to L.A. independent label Sound in Color, Exile’s label home, in 2004, Blu began cutting a few records with the DJ/producer and assisted him with his solo LP, Dirty Science (2006). Blu was still trying to break into the industry, but Exile was enjoying production credits for the likes of Jurassic 5, Kardinal Offishall, and Mobb Deep. The release of the soul-entrenched collaborative effort, Below the Heavens in August 2007, put them both in the limelight and had fans of the alternative rap scene buzzing; however, it specifically garnered Blu many “Artist to Watch” features in various magazine and online publications throughout the year and into 2008.
During subsequent years, they worked apart more than together; nevertheless, 2012 brought another co-billed LP, Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them. ~ Cyril Cordor, Rovi
So I took to reddit to ask for any one who wanted their tracks adding into that stream rotation and here are the chosen ones. These are fresh blood , new to the lofi scene and creating beats worthy of your attention.

J Dilla was an American record producer and rapper who emerged from the mid-1990s underground hip hop scene in Detroit, Michigan as one third of the acclaimed music group Slum Village. According to his obituary at NPR, he “was one of the music industry’s most influential hip-hop artists”, working with big-name acts including A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, The Roots, The Pharcyde and Common. Yancey died in 2006 of the blood disease thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Madlib is an American DJ, music producer, multi-instrumentalist, and rapper. He is one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed hip hop producers of the 2000s and has collaborated with different hip hop artists, under a variety of pseudonyms, including Madvillain, as well as the late J Dilla (as Jaylib). Madlib has described himself as a “DJ first, producer second, and MC last,”[1][2] and he has done several projects as a DJ, mixer, or remixer.

Christopher E. Martin (born March 21, 1966), better known as DJ Premier (or Primo by his fans, fellow musicians, and critics), is a prominent American hip hop producer and DJ, and the instrumental half of the duos Gang Starr and PRhyme.
Contrary to popular belief, he did not found nor even co-found Gang Starr.
He was introduced to DJing while attending school at Prairie View A&M in Houston, Texas. DJ Premier’s original stage name was Waxmaster C, the “C” taken from his first name, Chris, although he had already changed it to DJ Premier at the time he joined Gang Starr.
Considered by many fans to be one of the greatest hip hop producers, DJ Premier has produced countless tracks, for many groups and solo artists since the early 1990s. These include notable tracks for artists such as Jay-Z (“D’Evils”, “So Ghetto”), Big L (“The Enemy”), The Notorious B.I.G. (“Unbelievable”, “Kick In The Door”, “Ten Crack Commandments”), Nas (“N.Y. State of Mind”, “Nas Is Like”), Pitch Black (“It’s All Real”), M.O.P. (“Downtown Swinga”), Jeru the Damaja (“Come Clean”, “My Mind Spray”), KRS-One (“MC’s Act Like They Don’t Know”), Mos Def (“Mathematics”), Non Phixion (“Rockstars”), and Royce da 5’9″ (“Boom”).(Full list: djpremiertrackology.8kilo.com)
Collaborations
Outside of Gang Starr, some of Premier’s most lauded work is his collaborations with Jeru the Damaja and Group Home. With the former, Premier crafted one of the East Coast’s landmark albums in the form of The Sun Rises in the East, released in 1994. Their follow up to this, 1996’s Wrath of the Math, was regarded as a solid effort but not on par with its predecessor, although it did contain Jeru’s biggest hit to date, “Ya Playin’ Yaself”. Group Home’s Livin’ Proof (1995), although greatly overlooked at the time of its release, has eventually come to be critically acclaimed.
In 1994, DJ Premier collaborated extensively with jazz musician Branford Marsalis’s experimental group, Buckshot Lefonque, for their debut album. During the making of music video director, Hype Williams’ 1998 film, Belly, DJ Premier collaborated with neo soul leader D’Angelo for a song called “Devil’s Pie”, which was originally intended only for the film’s accompanying soundtrack. However D’Angelo soon changed his mind and decided to include the song on his sophomore album Voodoo (2000) In 2006 he co-produced Christina Aguilera’s Back To Basics album.
Samples
DJ Premier’s style of production epitomises the New York sound from his earlier peers. He is known for sampling jazz, funk, and soul artists, as well as sampling an artist’s past work, when he is creating a new track for that same artist. In addition, his photographic memory of rap lyrics allows him to distinctively “speak with his hands” by scratching in lyrics from several different songs to construct new phrases . Premier’s non-Gang Starr collaborations are well-known for his often-imitated signature of combining short vocal samples, often from multiple artists, to create a chorus. For example, for the chorus of Mos Def’s “Mathematics”, Premier cuts, in quick succession:
“The Mighty Mos Def…” (from Mos Def’s “Body Rock”),
“It’s simple mathematics” (from Fat Joe’s “John Blaze”),
“I revolve around science…” (from Ghostface Killah’s verse on Raekwon’s “Criminology”),
“What are we talking about here…” (unknown origin),
“Do your math..” (from Erykah Badu’s “On & On”), and
“One, two, three, four” (from James Brown’s “Funky Drummer”)
On certain artists’ work the vocal samples will all be vocal samples of the artist from the artists’ past work; “Nas Is Like” and “2nd Childhood” with Nas are two well-known examples of this.
On Jeru the Damaja’s “Physical Stamina,” however, Premier sampled and chopped up recordings of seminal electro-acoustic music from the 1960s.
Melodies
Premier usually creates a two-bar melody that repeats itself throughout the song. The aim of this is to showcase the MC’s skills by bringing focus away from the beat, while creating the song’s mood and a solid backdrop. Premier often changes speeds, filters and chops his breaks and adds scope to the melody with chimes and strings.
He has also shown innovation by playing rarely-used elements into a rap song (such as the xylophones on Biggie’s “Kick in the Door” or the ambient nature sounds on Nas’ “Nas is Like”), and his wide range of instruments (the piano loop on Jay-Z’s “D’Evils” versus the strings on Rakim’s “New York (Ya Out There?”) and production techniques (he played the melody backwards during the second half of Jay-Z’s “A Million and One Questions (Rhyme No More)”).
Drums
Premier’s drums have been known for complimenting his melodies. For example, during Nas’ “NY State of Mind”, two bars have a simple round of kicks and snares; in the following two, a complementing second set of drums plays out. This is repeated throughout.
Label ownership and future projects
DJ Premier currently owns two record labels. “Year Round Records” was founded in 2002 and has so far released several DJ Premier mixtapes as well as two 12″ vinyl singles for NYG’z and Blaq Poet. “Works Of Mart”, which is also the name of his publishing company, was founded in mid 2006 and released 12″ vinyl singles for artists Tef (aka Teflon) and F.A.B.I.D. (H. Stax and Mike Rone).
Since 2001, DJ Premier mentioned several times the plan to release a solo album entitled “A Man Of Few Words”, which has yet to be released. Other confirmed upcoming projects are a full-length colaboration with Nas, Blaq Poet’s long delayed album “The Best That Never Did It”, Tef’s (aka Teflon) long announced album “Contraband” and last but not least protegés NYG’z long delayed debut album “Pros and Cons”.
Rapper, DJ, and producer Pete Rock first emerged in 1991 as one half of a duo with C.L. Smooth, debuting with the All Souled Out EP. A hit LP, Mecca and the Soul Brother, followed before the two went their separate ways in the wake of 1994’s The Main Ingredient, with Rock remaining a prolific studio presence prior to the release of his solo debut, Soul Survivor, on Loud/RCA four years later. Dropped from the label, he continued his career as an independent producer, and later signed to Rapster/BBE in 2001 for PeteStrumentals. Two years later, the label released a two-part compilation of mid-’90s LPs with Lost and Found. In 2004, Rock produced the sequel to his debut, Soul Survivor II, with features coming from Pharaohe Monch, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, and former partner C.L. Smooth.
Preferring the role of Hip-Hop insider than hyped recording artist, DJ/Producer K-Def has kept a low profile in the game for a number of years. Earning critical praise for his early production work with Marley Marl on the classic album “Here Comes The Lords” by the group Lords Of The Underground. K-Def has steadily produced stellar Hip-Hop music for the world to bump their heads too.
With this opportunity K-Def carved out a defying discography. He has lent his production talents to artist such Tragedy (Intelligent Hoodlum), A.D.O.R., Da Youngstas, Real Live, World Renown, Positive K, and The Artifacts to name a few.
Mid-Ninties, having paid his dues, K-Def & Larry-O formed Real Live. They released an album aptly titled, The Turnaround: A Long Awaited Drama. His cousin Larry-O handled all the vocal production, and the duos complementary styles; were applauded by rap fans and critics. They created the underground smash ‘Real Live Shit”. K-Def has a blues/soul sampling style, which of late has come back in vogue, with current Hip-Hop artists.
A style he and other 1990’s Hip-Hop producers help solidify. Before his work had matured beyond 2000, his catalog had been sampled three times. The first time by Easy Mo Bee for “Machine Gun Funk” for The Notorious B.I.G., then by “Wildchild” for the club anthem “Renegade Master”, followed by a track called “Got Me Open” which was featured on Dr. Dre’s first release ..math Entertainment.
2004 K-Def kept his name relevant by producing the standout track, “Its Over” on the Ghostface Killah release, “The Pretty Toney Album” (Def Jam). He has kept the ball rolling by contributing tracks on other Ghostface project “Theodore Unit 718” and Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “The Osirus Mixtape”.
He was a contributor to El Da Sensei’s ’06 baby, “The Unusual”. In 2006, K-Def decided to work on an instrumental album called Willie Boo Boo”The Fool”, a tour-de-force in hip-hop production, he hopes it pleases his fans, who sit by the radio hoping that one of his tracks leak out. This is a first for K-Def, no rappers just the beats.
Keeping one ear to the underground, K-Def has always kept a hand in the mainstream. Def doesn’t strive for commercial success, but purity of form – a crazy ideology in today’s world, which pop culture; is Hip-Hop driven. Diddy cut the check for the ever popular “Shaft In Africa” sampled,”We Gon Make It,” in 2005. UGK then roped in ’80s Juice Crew legends, to help with the sticky sourthern funk of “Next Up”. A stand out track, which was featured on his instrumental opus “The Fool”.
Using virtual instruments since 1996, too craft his tracks. Def unleashed a scolding remix of Jay-Z’s “American Gangster.” Calling his “Real Live Gangster”, it has been internet certified and even bootleged. June 2008, sees Ghetto Man Beats releasing “Beats From The ’90s. A collection of beats collected off DAT tapes. Later in the fall, fans should perpare for the Real Live Gangster Instrumental album.
Born and raised in Washington DC, Damu The Fudgemunk has been building a loyal fanbase through his soulful, multi-layered beats, which he crafts using little more than an Akai MPC 2000, a huge record collection and a stack of floppy discs.
Damu is currently one half of the duo Y Society, along with Boston emcee Insight, and he also DJs for the group Panacea

From a love of emotive soul, jazz, raw hip hop and more came an assortment of inspired sound parts re-formed creating something new whilst retaining the original sentiment.
Apani (in mid/late 90s known as Apani B-Fly Emcee) is a female MC from Hollis, Queens, New York. She is a founding member of the hip hop super-group Polyrhythm Addicts, along with fellow members DJ Spinna, Mr. Complex, and Shabaam Sahdeeq.
Apani emerged from New York City’s underground hip hop scene in the 90’s. Over the years, she has gained enough fame and status to work with some of the most revered names in hip hop music, including Da Beatminerz, DJ Spinna, AntiPop Consortium, Talib Kweli, and Pharoahe Monch. She has made a reputation for herself as a lyrical powerhouse and one of the best emcees to ever grace the mic – male or female.
Back in 1995 a 17-year-old MC took to the hip-hop scene in the UK. Armed only with a few demos and oblivious of how to prosper in the music industry, little did he know he would end up being one of the few pioneers of hip-hop in the UK.
Funky DL started earning props when his music received regular air play on stations such as Kiss FM, Choice FM and Radio one by the likes of veteran Jockeys such as DJ 279, Max LX and Dave VJ and Tim Westwood.
In 1996 Funky DL went on to win the well known Fosters Ice Breakers competition and released his first record The Individual, this consequently led to DL being firstly offered a two single deal with Almost records which developed further into an album deal with Almo Sounds and a publishing deal with Rondor Music.
Equipped with unlimited studio access, DL set about crafting his debut album Classic Was the Day. The album was released in the late summer of 1997 and was widely received by the UK’s hip hop fraternity and veered DL on to win a MOBO award for the best hip hop act of 1997.
In the same year Funky DL went on to remix records for artists such as Missy Elliott, Keith Sweat, Adina Howard, and Connor Reeves, as well as going on to spearhead The London All-stars project (a collaboration of London’s finest rappers) including MCD, Blak Twang, TY, Skinnyman, ESP, Kwestmann, Q-Tee, Phoebe One, Fallacy and Rodney P. This was a unique one of a kind release and stunned the scene as no record had ever before been released with such a high profiled caliber of rappers from the UK.
In 1998 DL signed to an independent label “Utmost Records” and released his sophomore album Heartfelt Integrity. Another MOBO nomination was presented which reflected DL’s consistency and helped him to further cement his name and efforts in the scene.
Funky DL went on to tour Australia, France and Israel, the latter being an unusual destination for rappers but was overwhelmingly received, returning to London to support the likes of The Roots, K-Ci & JoJo, Ras Kas, Killah Priest, and stole the show in front of 3,000 people at the Hippodrome Leicester Square from an early Destiny’s Child at the Choice FM 8th Birthday Party.
After a very rewarding year, DL left Utmost Records to run his own label Washington Classics and in 1999 Washington Classics released numerous Funky DL records including the 12-inch “Stoppin and Startin” which surprised many of DL’s critics because of the amazingly tight lyricism. DL released his third album “One Another” (a first for any rapper in the UK) which led to yet another MOBO nomination and propelled him to even greater heights, touring in Japan where his music was being so widely received.
Single-handed, Funky DL had earned himself the title of “the hardest working man in hip-hop”, now synonymous with his name. Another successful year saw DL support the superstar “Eminem” for his UK tour and was recalled in early 2000 to join Eminem and Dr. Dre in the Brixton Academy. 2000 also saw DL do his second tour of Japan and also fly out to New York to work with the rapper Miilkbone and also feature on Bobbito Garcia’s radio show along side N’Dea Davenport and hip hop heavyweight producer Easy Mo Bee…
Funky DL’s fourth album When Love Is Breaking Down was released which led to DL’s return to Japan for its promotion, Touching down at the infamous Club Harlem Shibuya Tokyo and making several public appearances in HMV stores in Tokyo and Yokohama for signing and performing tracks in store live.
DL spent the next few years expanding his name in Japan by licensing many albums to established labels and touring extensively in many cities across Japan such as, Tokyo, Osaka, Mito, Hamamatsu, Wakayama, Utsunomiya, Fukuoka, Kyoto, Sapporo, Gifu, Nagoya, Okayama, Yokohama and Akita. DL also used this period to write, produce for and record with his R&B outfit Thursdays Love. The Debut Thursdays Love album For the Love of Jazz and Thursdays was so well received in Japan it was re-released after being licensed by a major Label in Japan.
This led DL to go on to produce “Life When You’re Driving” a yet to be released album by R&B vocalist Dyanna Fearon featuring the incredible talents of Xantonè Blacq (Current Keyboardist for Amy Winehouse).
Funky DL then went on to New York to produce for an up and coming rapper from Far Rockaway Queens named Sekz, and featured with Sekz on The Showbiz and A.G single “The Street.” DL released his 5th and 6th albums Blackcurrent Jazz and The Classic Fantasy (The most vivid and vibrant Funky DL albums yet) which have been so widely received in Japan making DL one of the UK’s most unique international artists to date as no other UK hip-hop act has been able to equal Funky DL’s achievements from then till now..
In 2005 the album Street Love, which the UK smash “Little Mike” is taken from, was a special limited release, meanwhile the album Since 77 saw seen its Japanese release to co-inside with DL’s five date summer tour of Japan as well as the launch of the funkydl.com and website as DL started to prepare idea’s for what was to be the now evident The 4th Quarter album.
A Funky DL Greatest Hits album was released in Japan in 2006, marking DL’s many accomplishments and was well received followed by a Latin styled release of old titles re-recorded and remixed with fresh visions.
DL then took the fork in the road in late 2006 and once again decided to do something different by flying out to New York to clear his head and write what was to be Street Swagger. A 24 track promotional CD which was to be a completely free release for 2007 to celebrate 10 years since the birth of Washington Classics and also a decade since his first album emerged. The Washington Classics Street Team went out in the streets of London to circulate 10,000 CD’s in the capital at no charge as well as making 10,000 downloads available from the website again for no cost to the consumer and this promotion proved as an invaluable asset to DL’s whole outfit.
DL then intensively worked to complete the album The 4th Quarter, which he has himself remarked as one of his “greatest moments in his career creatively” as it embodies the 4 elements and styles which he specializes in. The album is segmented into 4 areas which represent soul, new age, jazz and authenticity and was a listening experience which intrigued even the most subtle of hip-hop heads there are.
In Early 2008 DL recorded a unique album entitled The Jazz That Was Forgotten, which was to be an album that concentrated on 10 musical instruments heavily used in Jazz where each track on the album was a representation of that instrument with the said instrument providing the prominent melody or break within the track. This album along with a best of album was released in Japan in September of 2008 and was met with great responses from hip-hop fans who appreciate the connoisseurship element to real music. In the meantime Funky DL co-wrote and produced an album entitled Imagine Me for UK sensation Lei-an and with the business experience he had picked up over the years, was the key player behind the project management of this release in November 2008.
The productivity didn’t stop there as DL went back into the studio to produce the album The Interview, released on BBE Records in 2009. The album concept structured as a radio interview with radio personality Dave VJ, where in between the tracks VJ asks DL a question and the very last words of DL’s answers are the titles of the proceeding track which often go on to elaborate on DL’s answer(s). The album was created to give the listener much more than just an album but an insight to DL’s thoughts, feelings and views on various music related topics as DL was aware that all the fans of his music are not always able to catch him on the radio and this serves as a highly interesting listen.
As a producer, DL was requested to submit some music for the famous MTV show “Runs House” and his contributions were aired in the final episode of season two “Baby Comes Home”
Funky DLAs no stranger to the studio DL started to work on a soulful dance music project with production collective Gemini Infinity and set about to craft the brilliant album LOVECHASEDREAM, which was immediately signed by a Japanese Record label and subsequently released in September of 2009. The project featured the creative talents of some of DL’s most favored collaborates including Xantonè Blacq, Giorgio Serci, Sienna, Dukus Alemay and Lei-an.
Again DL went straight back in the studio to produce The Comfort Zone, a new album by UK hip-hop artist Pyrelli, completely and solely produced by DL himself. This is the first “hip-hop” album Funky DL has ever produced for another MC and features a wider variation of his production styles than usual. At the same time DL produced a few track for “Little Brown Girl”, an up and coming R&B vocalist from East London as well as a few production credits for UK hip-hop sensation Klashnekoff for his forthcoming mix-tapes project.
DL then embarked on his first tour opportunity in Europe playing at “Banana Split” in Cologne, Germany in front of an audience at capacity and also The Merrker in Baden, Switzerland with surrounding European countries to follow.
Washington Classics then set up the release of “Funky DL / The Ultimate Collection”, a 36 track double CD encompassing the most favorable musical moments from DL’s entire history as a recording artist.
DL took a little twist in the road in January 2010 and recorded Back To Frank, an amazingly interesting conceptual album in which DL sampled moments from Grammy Award Winning artist Amy Winehouse and her debut album Frank, and recreated and reprogrammed these samples into a whole hip-hop album which was promoted as FREE online download to which the masses scooped up immediately with over 180,000 downloads to date.
In June 2010 DL then followed with Back To Rap, the sequel to Back to Frank, where he took on the creative sampling techniques lifting from Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black album and again released this as a FREE online download, but this time including features from various UK urban acts such as Pyrelli, MCD, and Addictive, to name a few.
Also in 2010 funky DL released of his next studio album entitled A Classic Example of a… and did a 3 date tour in Japan in August performing in Tokyo and Osaka. On top of this Funky DL has recorded with Japanese Producers Melodiverse and CM Smooth, featuring their production as well as his own for his 2011 album Blackcurrent Jazz 2, which he himself remarks as “one of my best albums if not the..”
Blackcurrent Jazz 2 was an instant success with rave reviews of the genuine creativity and polish that brings the album together in such a refined and mature way. Funky DL also released a 4 album instrumental series entitled Cool Classic Jazzstrumentals, which encompasses some of the smoothest beats from his catalogue. DL visited Shanghai, China for the first time in July 2011 for a performance at the Casio “G-Shock – Shock The World Tour” and in addition, has explored further into Europe, performing shows in Berlin Germany (Club Cassiopeia) in September 2011 and also (The Merkker) in Badan, Switzerland in October 2011.
The frightening thing about all of DL’s accolades is that he feels as if this is just the beginning… So in summing up… For a young man who at 19 scored a 5 album deal with no management, won a MOBO and was the only X3 consecutive UK hip-hop nominee period, remixing for well known acts, travelling the world touring and producing for underground and established acts, owning and running a respected record label dealing with main stay labels… at the age of just 33 you could agree.. DL is the about one of the greatest and successful hip-hop inspirations the UK could offer!!!!
Five Deez is an American hip-hop group based in Cincinnati, Ohio and a part of the Wanna Battle collective, which also includes DJ Hi-Tek, Talib Kweli, Rubix, and Lone Catalysts. Consisting of Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician (John Marshall), Pase Rock, Kyle David (a.k.a. Chilly Most), and Sonic, the group released their debut album, Koolmotor, in 2001 on the Counterflow/Grooveattack/Dimid record labels to positive reviews. In 2002, they released a Japan-only EP, Slow Children Playing on their current-to-date label, !K7; in 2003, they released their second successive LP, Kinkynasti, also to positive reviews.
Most recently, on February 26, 2006, Five Deez released Kommunicator.
Five Deez have also worked extensively with members of the Japanese hip-hop scene, as it has also gained a strong fanbase in the country. It has especially collaborated with Nujabes, Shing02, and Force of Nature; Fat Jon worked with all three in the production of the Samurai Champloo Soundtrack, which has earned for Fat Jon and Five Deez a new fanbase within the international anime fandom. Instrumentals from Koolmotor and Kinkynasti have been used for Adult Swim’s famous “bumps” between commercials.
The name “Five Deez” is a simplification of the term “fifth dimension”, which is the dimension where you experience music.
Substantial is synonymous with hip-hop, from the U.V. Ink label he launched, to the lyrical dexterity of his common-man flow. His debut solo album, To This Union A Sun Was Born (Hyde Out Productions), did well everywhere, especially in Japan where it hit the Top 10. This success set off a career touring Asia, Europe and almost all of North America.
As things got busier, Substantial linked with QN5 Music to focus solely on artistic creation. That led to profound collaborations with the legendary DJ Kool Herc, Bootsy Collins, Chew Fu, Cunninlynguists, Nujabes (R.I.P.) and an appearance on Bruce Kulick’s (of KISS) album with all-star rocker Gene Simmons. His videos have appeared on MTV, BET, and VH1, while his music has made it to the second round of Grammy voting in three categories. Even the renowned car company Bentley reached out to have Substantial’s supergroup FANOMM (with Chew Fu & J-Cast) create a song for them and perform in China at their car show.
Vogue Magazine included his duo’s music (Bop Alloy) in a recent playlist. Not bad for the Prince George’s County rapper and community activist: He builds recording studios for at-risk youth in conjunction with Covenant House, and raises money for school music programs in VH1’s Save The Music Series. For his newest album Home Is Where The Art Is (Mello Music Group), Substantial called upon Oddisee, an acclaimed musician who directed, mixed and contributed a large portion of the production. That’s just the start of things to come. No wonder they call him Substantial.

Nomak ( ノ ー マ ー ク , Nomaku ? ) Or DJ Nomak 1 is a Japanese Hip-Hop artist and producer.
He began his career in 2005 by releasing the album Combine but it was in 2006 with the albums Wonderin ‘View and Fantastic View that he made himself known. In the same line as artists like Nujabes , his pieces are marked by a certain melancholy due to the preponderance of instruments such as flute, violin, saxophone or traditional Japanese musical instruments .
Nomak makes a lot of instrumental pieces, but does not hesitate to bring a few artists to accompany him in voice on some of his tracks, Pismo , Aaron Phiri, Paulie Rhyme , or else Abstract Rude make some appearances on his albums.

The music of Nujabes and other hip-hop artists played a major role in the anime series Samurai Champloo, which is set in a world full of anachronisms, blending elements of hip-hop culture into Edo period Japan. The mash-up of styles is similar to director Shinichirō Watanabe‘s prior series, Cowboy Bebop (prev), though the earlier series blended space travel, westerns and 1940s-60s jazz. The hip-hop/samurai blend of Samurai Champloo ran for 26 episode, and the series premiered in Japan on May 20, 2004, and an English dub of the series premiered in the United States on the Adult Swim anime block on May 14, 2005. Since then, the series has also aired in the United Kingdom, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and Germany. You can catch it streaming online, available both subbed and dubbed. Every episode opened with “Battlecry”, an edited version of the track by Nujabes and Shing02. The music for the show by Nujabes and others was collected in four CDs (Impression, Playlist, Masta and Departure) for release in Japan, and boiled down to one CD for the US.
Besides these works, Nujabes made at least three mixtapes: Sweet Sticky Things, for the fans of slower love songs (YT split: Side A parts 1b, 2, 3 (missing), 4 and 5; Side B parts 1, 2 (muted), 3, 4 and 5) the Ristorante Nujabes Mixtape (YT Split: Side A parts 1, 2, 3, 4and 5; Side B parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5), and Hyde Out Sound Lab mixtape with DJ RYOW (of ShinSight Trio).
Hip hop was previously known as a style of music that produced either groundbreaking pieces of conceptual art or instrumentals from a specific album, such as Dr. Dre’s 2001: Instrumentals Only. What this new, underground movement presents in the genre is a wave of DIY beat-makers producing lo-fi and often nostalgic pieces of instrumentals with either soul or hip-hop vocals. The strong dividing line between initial and recent incarnations of instrumental hip-hop is that this new movement features a heavy use of conceptual and anaesthetised nostalgia with an alternative/lo-fi edge rather than produced commercialism. If indie bedroom pop producers decided to turn to sample-based music, this experimental anti-strain of hip hop would most likely be their drug of choice.
Notable musicians involved with this movement include Nujabes, TMCT, BRRD, SENSEI HIMSELF, TOP$, as well as the entire roster featured on EL SERENO RECORDS. These producers and independent collectives all share a stylistic similarity within their lo-fi sound and nostalgic imagery. This obscure, unidentified strain of instrumental hip hop can be described as both a movement and a redefinition of its initial concepts and themes. Surrounded by tape hiss and VHS fuzz, this reincarnation of the genre is by far the most groundbreaking and thematically brilliant change hip-hop’s had in years. “Our ambition should be to rule ourselves, the true kingdom for each one of us,” Oscar Wilde once wrote. “And true progress is to know more, and be more, and to do more.”
This movement’s artistic definition seems to be private among the artists themselves, yet hard to associate, this fresh, new concept is easily identifiable while endlessly scrolling through the YouTube channel thanksforloitering, which has played a major role in bringing some of the movement’s most important artists into the social media mainstream. Pairing art-collage-esque visuals of old action movies, ‘90s hip hop shows, interviews, music videos, and various break-dancing footage with songs by the artists listed above in the second paragraph, the best way to fully realize and grasp this movement’s aesthetic is by visiting this vitally important channel – effortlessly highlighting the fact that this is hip-hop’s answer to punk in the digital age.
Whether the musicians realise it or not, the intentions and fleshed-out concept of this movement is still widely recognizable. TMCT first grabbed our attention in early 2014 with the release of SNOW BEACH VOL. 01 (MMJ Review), which was later reissued on cassette via boundary-pushing netlabel bootleg tapes. Shortly after, BUBBLE GOOSE was equally impressive – carrying the same weight channeled through dusty, lo-fi vinyl samples, breakbeats, and interpretations of ‘90s boom bap classics. TMCT is certainly the most accessible yet enjoyable artist from this movement to listen to. His compositions are often jazzy and brilliantly capture some of the rawest and most intricate details of this avant-garde approach to rap instrumentals.
If there’s anything that beautifully captures the essence of the recently booming cassette tape-revival phase in contemporary DIY culture, it’s this movement which solely relies on tape releases to carry the weight of the musical style’s processed, lo-fi aesthetic. If artists like J Dilla and Madlib hinted at hip-hop culture in their songs, then producers such as TMCT, SENSEI HIMSELF, jalen, Ohbliv, and JAMES MATTHEW fully embrace it.
Singer Neil Halstead says that the song is part of “a bunch of new tracks we’ve been working on and it feels as fun, and as relevant playing together now as it did when we first started.”

I often think about all the great tunes out there. There are many and vast and they all mean different things to different people. Particular tracks identify a time a place, a moment in each persons memory. There is no definitive dance track of all time as that answer is personal to the individual. My choice though would have to be Underworld – Rez. Read More

Since my last blog post, I have literally been inundated with a tweet complaining about my negativity towards the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. I do want to put that right, because I know that for the athletes it’s the culmination of four years of hard work. So, dedicated to all the clean athletes out there, and because we all know that Chillsky likes a Kygo remix, this is High For This by Ellie Goulding. Enjoy!
Don’t forget, at all other times, if it’s Chillout music you’re after, look no further than Chillsky.com

Far be it for me to put a downer on something, but I just can’t get excited about the forthcoming Rio Olympics! Now, drug taking allegations aside, I know we’re going to see blue skies, sunshine and golden sandy beaches, but let’s face it, London 2012 this is not!!
So, if Claire Balding’s enthusiastic charm doesn’t float your boat, I suggest listening to some sublime Chillout tracks from the Chillsky!
…..and once you’ve done that, have a listen to this!
Thank you for reading.

What can I possibly say about 2016? A U.S. presidential election, the U.K. referendum on the EU and the subsequent political fall out; I can feel my blood pressure rising just by writing this! Then, if that isn’t enough, in David Bowie and Prince, the music industry has lost two of its greats. Read More

Privacy’ feat. Oscar Key Sung is the third single taken from Charles Murdoch’s debut album ‘Point’.
It’s a pretty weird video but the tune stand up .
In 2013 Charles Murdoch began playing live and has already played at sold-out shows alongside Nicolas Jaar at Sydney Festival at Town Hall, Shlohmo’s headline Sydney show at the Civic Underground, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs’ show in Brisbane, as well as playing alongside Lapalux and Cashmere Cat at the Future Classic x Vivid Festival show at Sydney Opera House.
Now, it probably hasn’t escaped your attention that this weekend is the Oscars; and before I go any further, I’d like to congratulate Leonado DiCaprio on his Best Actor award. I’m not saying that the Oscars are predictable, okay, yes I am! But, if you want to avoid watching Hollywood’s great and good patting themselves on their backs, then there is more than one reason to boycott the ceremony. The second of which is to listen to some sublime chillout tracks. So, this week I give you three Oscar themed podcast recommendations.
The first is for the best performance in a supporting role, and this goes to Chillsky’s cat on episode #61. The second is for best prop and goes to the broken mic on Chillsky #64. Finally, the third is for the best adaptation of a 70’s television game show and goes to ‘The Price is Right’ on Chillsky #75. All three are right out of Chillsky’s top drawer. Enjoy!
Now, one more recommendation, from Kousk on Soundcloud.
Thank you for reading.

If you’re anything like me, then washing the dishes is a good time to chill. It is the one time you have the kitchen to yourself while the rest of your family are posting selfies on Facebook or playing on their x-box! The question is, what to listen to?
Well, at 40 minutes long, Chillsky #75 is perfect for washing up after a dinner for four. But, if there is just two of you, at 29 minutes, Chillsky #84 will leave you suitably chilled. Lastly, if we’re talking a dinner party for six or eight, look no further than Chillsky #60. At 1 hour 23 minutes it is a chillout masterpiece, but be warned, for the last 40 minutes you’re going to need one more drink!
Now, one more recommendation, from Tara Putra on Soundcloud. I hope you enjoy.
Thank you for reading.

1. There’s a presidential election going on, we know. There is much flag waving and high-fiving, understandably! But, here’s the thing, we know the result already! So, come on America, inaugurate the lady and then chill.
2. Then, if that’s not enough, David Cameron has decided that it’s high time that we decide whether we want to live in the 21st Century or go back to the 1970’s with half of his cabinet! Dave, I’m fed up with the debate already, it’s time to chill.
3. Granted, the third reason isn’t going to resonate with the populous, but somebody has to look out for the little man on the street. So, as much as you enjoy the company of Ecuadorian diplomats, and going out on the town isn’t really an option, it must be time to chill.
Now, assuming you’re still with me, you’re going to need a recommendation or two. Not surprisingly, the first is from Chillsky: take it from me, they don’t come any better than #63, a cool cool mix of chillout tracks and the best mention of cashew nuts on a podcast ever! The second is a mix from Therapist called Rebirth of the Quantum Dragonfly. Enjoy!

To coincide with the release of Just Music’s Ambient Zone 2 compilation, director Richie Johnston (Weightless – Marconi Union, close to 1 million Youtube views) has created a unique and mesmerising feature-length one hour music video to accompany the album in its entirety from beginning to end. Shot in one continuous take, the video features footage of a ballet dancer performing a live visualisation and interpretation of the album, to which Johnston applies a concept he has developed using a digital version of an analogue technique called slit – scan photography to create a totally immersive experience, a fascinating merger of sound and vision, to the most spectacular and enthralling effect.
As you watch, you cannot help but be drawn in with utter wonder and intrigue as the mind tries to make sense of the stunning imagery. At the same time, the video instills in the viewer a beautiful sense of calm and tranquility, the perfect accompaniment for an album that produces the same effects within its listeners.

Nujabes was best known for his approach to hip hop beats, often blending jazz influences into his songs creating a mellow, nostalgic and atmospheric sound. He sampled a wide range of instruments and genres to create a soothing vibe. In addition to Japanese artists like Uyama Hiroto, Shing02, L-Universe, and Minmi, Nujabes collaborated with various underground American hip hop acts such as CYNE, Cise Starr (as a solo apart from the hip-hop collective CYNE), Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, CL Smooth, Fat Jon, Terry Callier as well as British rapper Funky DL. He was also a member of the production duo Urbanforest, an experimental collaboration with Nao T.
On February 26, 2010, Seba Jun was involved in a traffic accident upon exiting the Shuto Expressway late at night. He was pronounced dead at a hospital in Shibuya Ward after efforts to revive him failed.
“Nujabes may not be physically with us anymore, but through his music, his legacy and lust for life lives on”. Co-founder Gus Navarro remarked that, “The music of the late producer Nujabes is something to hold onto and never let go.”

What can we learn by examining only the first and final shot of a film? This video plays the opening and closing shots of 55 films side-by-side. Some of the opening shots are strikingly similar to the final shots, while others are vastly different–both serving a purpose in communicating various themes. Some show progress, some show decline, and some are simply impactful images used to begin and end a film.

The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released in March 1973. It built on ideas explored in the band’s earlier recordings and live shows, but lacks the extended instrumental excursions that characterised their work following the departure in 1968 of founder member, principal composer, and lyricist, Syd Barrett. The Dark Side of the Moon ’s themes include conflict, greed, the passage of time, and mental illness, the latter partly inspired by Barrett’s deteriorating mental state.
Developed during live performances, an early version of the suite was premiered several months before studio recording began; new material was recorded in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at Abbey Road Studios in London. The group used some of the most advanced recording techniques of the time, including multitrack recording and tape loops.
Analogue synthesizers were given prominence in several tracks, and a series of recorded interviews with the band’s road crew and others provided the philosophical quotations used throughout. Engineer Alan Parsons was responsible for some of the album’s most notable sonic aspects and the recruitment of non-lexical singer Clare Torry. The album’s iconic sleeve, designed by Storm Thorgerson, features a prism that represents the band’s stage lighting, the record’s lyrical themes, and keyboardist Richard Wright’s request for a “simple and bold” design.
The Dark Side of the Moon was an immediate success; it topped the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart for one week and remained in the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988. With an estimated 50 million copies sold, it is Pink Floyd’s most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. It has twice been remastered and re-released, and has been covered in its entirety by several other acts. It produced two singles, “Money” and “Time”. The Dark Side of the Moon is one of Pink Floyd’s most popular albums among fans and critics, and is frequently ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time.
Taken from the compact disc “Classic Balearic Mastercuts Volume 1”.
Imogen Jennifer Heap is an English singer-songwriter and composer. She is known for her work as part of the musical duo Frou Frou and her solo albums, which she writes, produces, and mixes. She has produced four solo albums. Her 2009 album, Ellipse, was a North American chart success that earned Heap two Grammy nominations, winning Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, in recognition of her technical and engineering work in the said record. In 2010 she received the British Academy’s Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement.
Brian Eno (pronounced /ˈiːnoʊ/) (born on 15 May 1948, in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England), with full name Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, is an English electronic musician, music theorist and record producer. As a solo artist, he is best known as the father of modern ambient music.
In memory of Kyle Jaskot.
In mid-2009, Toro y Moi was signed to Carpark Records, on which he released his first full-length album Causers of This in January 2010. His second album, Underneath the Pine, was released on February 22, 2011. He was chosen by Caribou to perform at the ATP Nightmare Before Christmas festival that they co-curated in December 2011 in Minehead, England.[10]On September 13, Toro y Moi released an EP titled Freaking Out, featuring a cover of “Saturday Love” by Cherrelle and Alexander O’Neal.
In January 2013, Toro y Moi released his third studio album, Anything in Return, which he described as having “sort of a ’90s dance mix sound.” According to him, the album “was definitely influenced by lots of different types of house, from deep house to two-step […] The chords [‘Harm in Change’ and ‘Say That’] use—that’s just something I’ve been a fan of for a while. I really wanted to mess around with those kinds of elements and revisit what I did on Causers [of This], but make those elements a little bit better and more apparent.”[The album was called “highly indebted to the late sacrosanct hip-hop producer J Dilla” by the San Francisco Bay Guardian. In promotion of Anything in Return, Toro y Moi has embarked on a tour across North America and Europe, which started on May 27, 2013 in George, Washington and ended on November 10 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Toro y Moi also has a dance side project named Les Sins. In February 2013, Toro y Moi was named one of Fuse’s thirty must-see artists at SXSW.
In the studio, he utilizes a Roland JX-3P, a Moog, and multiple soft synths.

Orbital was an English electronic dance music duo from Sevenoaks, Kent, consisting of brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll. Their career initially ran from 1989 until 2004, but in 2009 they announced that they would be reforming and headlining The Big Chill, in addition to a number of other live shows in 2009. The band’s name was taken from Greater London’s orbital motorway, the M25, which was central to the early rave scene and party network in the South East during the early days of acid house.
In addition, the cover art on three of their albums features stylised atomic orbitals. Orbital were both critically and commercially successful, and known particularly for their element of liveimprovisation during shows, a rarity among techno acts. They were initially influenced by early electro and punk rock.
The Orb’s critical and commercial success in the United Kingdom peaked in the early 1990s with the albums The Orb’s Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld and U.F.Orb, the latter of which reached #1 on the British album charts in 1992. This success led to its infamous appearance on Top of the Pops, where the group showcased its quirky style by playing chess (an interest of Paterson’s since his early youth) while the group’s single “Blue Room” ran in the background.
The Orb’s mid-1990s albums were met with mixed reactions from British critics; however, its work received praise from American publications such as Rolling Stone. The group experimented with vocalists on its next two albums, which critics generally described as bland and uninspired. The Orb then shifted gears to a minimal techno style spearheaded by member Thomas Fehlmann, releasing its new material on the record label Kompakt.
Kakatsitsi are a group of traditional drummers, dancers and singers from the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana, with their roots in the fishing community of Jamestown, the part of Accra where the British based their colonial headquarter.

Winter is knocking and its that time again to sit back and spend some downtime.
Vok – Tension :
Shortly after forming, Vök won an annual band contest, “Músíktilraunir,” which is the Icelandic version of a battle of the bands. The third member, guitarist Ólafur Alexander, joined the band shortly thereafter. Vök has since been generating significant hype in the vibrant music scene of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík.
With a sound mainly comprised of soft electronics and melodic vocals, guitar also plays a prominent role in Vök’s sound placing Vök a bit more in the realm of indie-electro, thus resulting in comparisons to Florence and the Machine, The XX, and The Knife.

Aaron Oliver Lee
Biography:
Aaron Oliver Lee is a 24 year old self-taught pianist and solo musician. Music has always been an intricate part of his life playing a large role in his personal and professional development. He always has that vision and aspirations of becoming a world renowned musician. In 2006 Aaron began his first project which he called “Sweet Dreams…” On this amazing compilation of songs (and there are twenty of them) there are a few that are being highlighted, playing an important role in distinguishing the artist as an evolving musician and an evolving human being. These twenty songs were based on a very difficult time in his life. Aaron’s self analogy is quite revealing stating that he “is just an insignificant person trying to make a significant impact on the world”.
Certain songs that were chosen mark certain times in Aaron’s life that have had an impact in his life – perhaps even life changing. He reveals these moments in songs like “A Journey To…(A Prelude to Neverland) or “Neverland” and “My Secret Heart”. “Neverland” plays the larger part in the compilation of songs as it was the first track to be written for this CD. It has gone through many changes and has significant meaning to the entire project and to Aaron himself.
“Sweet Dreams….” literally and metaphorically speaking, is geared towards dreams each containing traces of both hope and fear, light and darkness in every day life. This CD is more of an interactive CD allowing the listener to interject self interpretation and analysis as it might relate to their own lives. “The title of this CD is heavily based on J.M. Barrie’s tale of Peter Pan as it relates to non-fiction lives”, states Aaron. As stated by the artist, “Neverland” is the most poignant and impactful in his library of songs. Listening to it you are instantly transformed and transported to an emotional roller coaster – a world of calm and the fury. Aaron Oliver Lee’s piano playing is magnificent, breath-taking and awe inspiring. This instrumental piece truly allows your own emotion and life experience to overlay this glorious music as his own life did. Precious compositions that you want to cherish and hold dear to your heart. His music is beautifully written, arranged, recorded and delivered.
Although this is his debut CD, he has a lifetime of emotional and thought provoking compositions erupting into a fantasia of sound. Audiences from all over the world will be eagerly waiting for the release of his follow up CD “Out Of Time” which has no release date at this time.
Aaron Oliver Lee is currently working on a Winter themed EP titled “The Last Snow”.
The first song on “Sweet Dreams…” was licensed for an automobile commercial in France and throughout Europe for Renault Z.E. in their new ad campaign for 100% electric cars with 0% emissions. This commercial is available on their website as well as YouTube, etc. and is called “Renault-The Electric Life”. The commercial will be making its way through Europe over the next year and hopefully Renault will pick the commercial back up for another 2 years in which it will air in even more countries. Bravo Aaron Oliver Lee for outstanding work and accomplishments you’ve received and this is just the beginning.
Aaron is hoping to put a tour together for this coming summer or fall of 2012.
“I am very grateful for everything that has been happening to me and my career this year. It gives me hope that truly in darkness there can be some light. I can only hope that people will enjoy my music as much as I enjoy playing it and that I can change lives someday”.
You’ve changed mine already.

Coburn Tuller
Biography:
It began on a midnight walk in 1996 with the sound of wind chimes wafting through the breeze on a midnight walk. I’ve played many instruments over the years from guitar and dulcimer to grand piano, but none sounded anything like the music of that fateful stroll, and I was immediately captivated. The next day I bought a piece of aluminum tubing and delighted when it resonated a perfect Bb for over a minute when struck with a mallet. For me, the discovery was a point of no return. In the 15 years since that afternoon my passion, vision, and biggest challenge has been the perfection of an entirely new instrument inspired by that beautiful, pure resonance, which I call “The Tones”. Standing over 8 feet tall, The Tones consist of three pyramidal structures supporting 90 aluminum and brass tubes ranging from 7 inches to over 6 feet in length. When played, they have a natural reverberation and enduring sustain audible up to 2 minutes after initial playing, creating gorgeous overlays of harmonic, multi-timbral sound behind foreground melodies. Uniquely, here’s an instrument which continues making music long after a formal composition has ended. This is many listener’s favorite part and is showcased in the long fade outs.
The music itself emerges in various ways. At times, I can hear the melodies within these overlays. At others, it is the chance combination of tones played while fine tuning a particular note as in Firefly, or simply playing with the sound itself as in New Peace. Mystic Dream began with a suggestion to play the same note two octaves apart and Ceremony emerged while adding a series of Bb tones to the set. One of my very favorites is waking up in the middle of the night with melodies running through my head which initiates a mad dash to the studio. Many have said the music of the Tones is as unique and beautiful as the instrument itself. Others claim the vibrant spirit has an ability to dissolve the limitations of our perceptions and deliver us into a place of peace and tranquility. Makes me wonder, if butterflies could sing, perhaps it would sound something like this. Namaste
Felice Del Gaudio
Biography:
In the album “Home” Felice Del Gaudio moves between the genres, contaminating the jazz with the “newyorker” minimalism,ì in the song “Uptown”,using ethnic instruments like the afghan “Rabab” and epic syntethizers like the Yamaha VL 1 (virtual sound synthesis) in the song “Desert”,and introducing little musical pearls like “Song for Pedro” and “Asylum”

He has performed both solo and with bands in the Boston, Albuquerque and Baltimore/Washington areas.
Press
Release:
“The Chill Funk Trip,” the highly anticipated album by Made Of Wood, is now available via CD Baby, iTunes, and Amazon.
“The Chill Funk Trip” is an eclectic and atmospheric album. It features songs like “Fire Up the Sidewalk,” a homage to 70s funk with a tip of the hat to David Holmes, and “Are We Lost?” a chill-out number with swirling strings and Wurlitzers that led to Made of Wood being a “Top 10 Independent Artist” in late 2011 on Jango.com.
“The thing that inspires me to make music is to create a new place, usually encapsulated by a feeling, where I can take the listener”, says Dan Waldman, the composer behind the Made of Wood project.
“I think I’m pretty visual, so a lot of my music evokes images in my mind, sometimes abstract. Some of the things I’m doing right now are mainly supposed to be fun, (songs like “Electric Funk Break for Addy,” and “Fire Up the Sidewalk),” but others are pretty intricately created: songs like “Lantern of Embudo,” “Are We Lost?” and “A Sleep and A Forgetting.” I’m hoping those songs reward people who listen to them more than once.”
Magnet Magazine exclusively reviewed Made of Wood’s last album and shared:
“Made of Wood” instrumentalist Dan Waldman takes it all the way. If you like lounge, you will like this. If you love the instrumental sampling technique, say, similar to Moby…you will like this. But here’s the secret weapon…if you think that the music heard in far out 70’s cop shows is unearthed dirty deep funky goodness, pick up your shovel and dig Made of Wood.”

About Made of Wood:
Made of Wood is the solo project of composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Waldman. Drawing inspiration from sources as varied as Air, Funkadelic and The Cinematic Orchestra, Dan characterizes his music as somewhere between downtempo electronic music and acid jazz, with a lot of 70s Funk influence.
The music is created using a combination of improvisation and electronic elements- many of which come from sampling and alterations of his own performances. Dan Waldman, an accomplished pianist, is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music. He has performed both solo and with bands in the Boston, Albuquerque and Baltimore/Washington areas.

After garnering international critical acclaim and selling over 14 million records worldwide, experimental electronic music artist Robert Miles has returned with his new album Th1rt3en, scheduled for US release in February 2011 through his own indie label, S:alt Records. Implementing a progressive blend of electronica, alternative rock, and jazz compositions the album’s reflective experimentations break new ground and are a sonic leap forward from Miles’s previously critically acclaimed predecessors, Organik and Miles_Gurtu. Guest artists on Th1rt3en include Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Dave Okumu (The Invisible), Mike Patto and John Thorne (Lamb).
Toro y Moi, aka South Carolina native Chaz Bundick, released his second album about now. The press release describes the record, Underneath The Pine, as a companion record to the first — Bundick had originally planned to release both in 2010. And this one, unlike Causers Of This features all live instrumentation and no samples. “Still Sound” is much meatier than “Blessa” or any of Causers Of This, this track is also featured on our sister site stereosea.*Nods to his label for granting us play*
Ryan Mauskopr – Spirit Queue Journey – I was wondering round the net looking for cool tunes and stumbled across this tune which Ryan has kindly let me play. Check our his site for other goodness.
Krusht – Interiors – These guys contacted us direct for playage and we can only kindly answer their call. Check out their site for further info.

ChillCast 18 – Things a little different as I’ve moved from a PC to a imac ( awsome computer ) not that your interested but it means this is the first podcast on my new imac and the first without me talking!
Hey people,
Just a small note to say the next podcast will be slightly delayed as Ive just bought a new imac and I need to transfer across all my music or re-burn all my cd’s whatever i find the easiest.
I’m also moving from a pc to the imac and I used CastBlaster on the PC but now will be using Ubercaster which is a little different and will take a bit of getting used too.
So yer… next chillcast is in the pipeline just technology needed to make it happen.
Id recommend an imac they are very swish.

A bonus chillcast for the holiday season.
“Glósóli” [?glou:?soul?] (Icelandic for “Glowing sole”) is a song by Sigur Rós, released as part of their 2005 album Takk… Together with Sæglópur it was the first single released from the album, available as a download only release on iTunes in America and Europe respectively.
The name is a combination of gló- from the verb að glóa meaning “to glow, shine, glitter” and sóli meaning “sole.” The second element of the name, sóli, is homonymous with a declension of the word for “sun”, sól. However, sól, being a feminine noun, only appears as sóli in certain grammatical cases. In this instance, being the title of a song and declined for the nominative case, the form reveals it to be the masculine noun sóli.
